PROJECT 4 - PENCIL SKETCHING: Drawing four

Objectives:

• Students should demonstrate skills in using the pencil as a delineation media.
• Students should demonstrate knowledge in artistic composition.
• Students should demonstrate knowledge of pencil sketching instruments and techniques.

Task:

1. Students are to replicate the drawing of the following vegetation types in pages within the sketchbook:

• A page of 3 deciduous trees, one of which should approximate 4 inches in height
• A 3/4 page of coniferous trees
• A quarter page of palms
• A page of shrub types along with groundcovers
• A page of your favorite landscape scene that incorporates all the above.
          

2. The line drawings should be lightly drawn onto the paper using an H pencil. When the drawings are complete, the "lines" should not be distinguishable.

3. Beginning with hard leads and moving to increasingly softer leads, students should build the layers of the drawing as in the first exercise. 

4. Students are to "time" their drawings to keep track of how long it takes to complete the work.

5. When the drawing is complete, it should be secured with workable fixative.

Drafting tape or dots
Vinyl eraser
Pencils: 2H, H, HB, F, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 6B
Pointer or sharpener
Sandpaper pad
Brush
Eraser shield
Workable Fixative

Due: Thursday, September 4, beginning of class

Approximate time to complete: 7 to 10 hours
