patient room location on site

Oftentimes nursing the patient back to health is thwarted at the most fundamental level… the patient room. Today’s typical patient room settings all too often contribute to the emotional stress generated when patients go through treatments to resolve their ailments.

The intent of this project is to utilize the basic principles of the anthroposophic medical approach. Growing ever more popular in Europe, and now finding a place in America, this new approach combines modern medicine with spiritually based treatments centered on the emotional and psychological health of the patient. Shaping the space to create possibility for both privacy and community, letting daylight enter gently, and applying subtle color to interior surfaces all contribute to creating an environment that provides a sense of control and nurture. Derived from the theories of Anthroposophy, elements such as light, color, and movement are applied to provide a space for the patient with a sense of security and belonging.

Upon entering into the room, one can sense the private and shared realms. The lightweight roof structure escapes from the grasp of the thick hay bale walls. This combination creates a sense of security and escape simultaneously; at ground level, the patient is protected; above, the hovering curvature of the ceiling gives way to the warm glow of the sunlight, suggesting a sense of gravitational resistance, release.
