patient room location on site

Walking down the corridor of the patient wing, one is welcomed into the light-filled volume of the anteroom where there are freshly cut flowers displayed in a niche. Also carved into the walls of the anteroom is a hand sink and storage for nurses and doctors. From the anteroom, which is shared with the neighboring patient, each patient has his or her own entrance door into the more private realm of the patient room itself. The anteroom and an exterior space to the south encourage interaction among patients, thus contributing to the social order of the clinic.

While lying in bed, the patient has a direct view of the entry door. One is embraced by the room due to the shaping of walls and ceiling planes. The centrally located structure reaches up to the floating ceiling plane like the branches of a tree. In contrast, the outer partition walls are washed with light that accents artwork the patient has chosen. Juxtaposed again is a thick wall where a window-seat has been carved out. Though the bathroom is an interior space, like the anteroom it is filled with natural light. These sectional qualities also allow for natural cross-ventilation.
