patient room location on site

This proposal for the design of a two patient room receives its inspiration from the characteristics of a cocoon. The purpose of the cocoon is to create an environment where the caterpillar can mature into a butterfly. The cocoon provides a healthy, protected environment for the creature. A patient room should provide a similar type of environment for the ill or injured human being to be protected and secure.

Light is an essential element in creating a healing environment. The cocoon’s “silky” material enables the cocoon to glow and make use of the sunlight. The proposed south facing patient room has corner windows with glazing running into the perpendicular wall, to create a gentle glow of daylight on the wall, thus contributing to an uplifting, warm, and healing environment. The skylight is designed to create a play of light on the wall facing the patients when lying in their beds. As the sun moves throughout the day the light on the wall will change, enabling the patients to connect with time. The window on the south wall allows for views of the wetlands, farmlands, groves of trees, and the existing vernacular farm buildings, that are an important part of the community. It is important that the patient is able to connect with the surroundings and know his/her place within the environment.
