patient room location on site
|
|
The intent of this project was to focus attention on the world of
the patient, in order to answer the question, How can I shape this space to provide
a healing environment?; While the room has a
simple geometric shape in plan, a variety of realms are created through varying ceiling
heights and floor patterns. Portals mark transitions from entry to sitting
alcove and from there to the sleeping area. Within these portals are niches
and shelves for the display of artwork and personal items, allowing patients to
personalize their room.
Vernacular buildings on the site were the inspiration for
the choice of materials and roof construction. While thick masonry walls give a sense of
security and protection, the exposed wooden roof structure above the sleeping area create
lightness and an interesting ceiling plane for patients who are bed-ridden.
